Before we string the piano, all new felts are applied to the plate. Then we set each string by hand – each coil around the tuning pins are hand made and then driven into the pinblock. The strings grow gradually thicker as you move from the treble to the bass end. The tension on the strings must be brought up slowly as putting too much tension on too quickly will break the strings. The strings are also allowed to stretch, as it settles in, so we tune each restrung piano seven times before leaving the shop.
